The Network Administrator's Toolkit should contain, besides the usual basic toolkit,
some of the following tools:-
- RJ-45 Crimping Tool. (A decent one, not a Radio Shack plastic one that will not crimp reliably, or break a few times after it has been used)
- Crossover cable (Useful for connecting two nodes, for transmit & receive, without a connectivity device)
- Tone Generator and Locator (Sometimes called a "Fox & Hound") (Especially useful for identifying cables in a patch panel or closet)
- Multimeter
- Cable Tester(s)
Depending on the cable type and its use, there are basically two types of cable tester:-
- Simple continuity tester - to determine electrical connectivity issues (open circuit, short, etc.)
- Complex cable integrity tester - to evaluate cable's effectiveness for specific signal transmission
- Loopback adaptor(s) (Different types for different connector types. RJ-45 ethernet is the most common)
- Wireless Network Tester
- Software tools that can be useful include:-
- Network Monitors
- Protocol Analyzers
